1.) Smoothness and efficiency of the engine:

The engine is the most important component of any mode of transport, it provides movement, which makes a box of storage into a locomotive. Diesel engines are much preferred in water and also in trains due to their efficiency and their ability to produce more torque than a gasoline engine. A properly maintained engine tends to burn less fuel, produces less harmful pollutants and is much more more reliable. An engine failure in the middle of nowhere is one of the last experiences you might want to have, taking care of you engine proves to be much more cheaper than just repairing when a problem arises. Manufacturers always give proper service charts extrrnally or in the manual together with some very good tips on how to take good care of your vessel, and these must be carried out dutifully.

Rusting or corrosion is a process where metal reacts with moisture and air to produce a different colored substance that is very weak, this weakness can result in fatal accidents if not taken care of properly. This can be easily prevented as the reaction is vey slow, rusting takes place when a metal is in contact with air and moisture for a very long period of time. Keeping in check of moisture on all the metal parts including aluminium using a set of towels is easiest. Cleaning your boat every two weeks helps greatly the collected dust has a high affinity for water.

4.) Hull strength

The hull together with the propeller are the two major parts of a boat that are always in contact with water. In time barnacles and other forms of algae can develop on the bottom. Having the hull cleaned involves a diver cleaning the hull from the water line and below to ensure all barnacles and other forms of algae and marine life are cleaned from the boat. The diver should also ensure all running gear below the water is free of barnacle growth. In warmer areas, this should be done within a time period of two-three weeks as marine life develops quickly under heat.

5.) Propeller

A propeller may seem a simple component but it also needs regular maintenance. Check the propeller before use for any obvious damage, scratches and algae are very easy to spot but spotting dents can be tough. In a regular time period throughout the season, carefully detach the propeller with help from a friend and look for any debris, fishing line or gunk that may have gotten trapped in the propeller shaft. If there is a lot of junk, or if your propeller shows any signs of serious damage like dents, then take your boat into a shop for a closer look. One way to spot dents is by measuring the length of each blade with a measuring tape, a difference in the length indicates a dent.
